HM Revenue and Customs used to issue employee coding notices annually at the start of a new tax year.
However, from 31 May 2017 HMRC will be using the real time information provided by employers each month to ensure employees are paying the correct amount of tax in a ‘more proactive way’. As a result, employers may receive more coding notices moving forward.
HMRC plans to notify you of changes on a monthly basis, and whilst it doesn’t expect any additional administrative burden for you, we certainly do! There’ll be more changes to put through your payroll scheme and inevitably more staff queries as a result of their fluctuating net pay.
